Your First Dog Show?

It may look like a beauty contest, but what 's really going on is some serious judging. They judge different breeds against each of the breed's standards to find the dog closest to it. Judges will look at structure, coat, size, teeth, movement temperament, etc. This is important because it helps to preserve the different breeds. It also gives the spectator a great chance to see the best of the breeds, find out about breeds and breeders, and also makes for a nice chance to see all the different breeds of dogs at once.

Our first show was a "Puppy Fun Match".

Below are few pointers that will help to make your first show fun.

  • Do enjoy yourself & bring kids too. Some types of food and drinks are usually available, so are rest rooms.
  • Do if it's an outdoor show; bring blanket or folding chairs, as seating sometimes is not available.
  • Do wear comfortable shoes so you can walk around and ask questions. There will be vendors for all sort of great pet items and crafts. They always have people around to clean up after the dogs but you never can tell, so watch your step. Watch out for little puddles and piles.
  • Do get the program / catalog and circle the breeds you want to see. Check the time that they show so you can ask your questions well before show time. Show time can be a hectic time for exhibitors and you won't be able to get too many answers then.
  • Do always ask if you may touch a dog, make sure kids ask you too.
  • Do ask all the questions you can. In the back of the program book there is space for jotting stuff down. It is important to ask about things like pedigree, temperament, exercise, diet, and grooming needs.
  • Don't make loud noises or yell near the show rings or allow kids to run near the ring. The dogs can get spooked. They, their owners, and handlers have worked long and hard for those few minutes in the ring.
  • Do cheer and clap for your favorites you are there to enjoy yourself
